Unidentified killer responsible for at least five confirmed murders across Northern California. The killer taunted police and media with coded letters. The 340-character cipher was decoded in 2020; the 13-character cipher remains unsolved.

Six-year-old beauty queen found murdered in her family's Boulder, Colorado home on Christmas Day. Unknown male DNA was found on her clothing. The Ramsey family was cleared in 2008. No arrest has ever been made.

D.B. Cooper Hijacking
1971
The only unsolved case of air piracy in U.S. commercial aviation history. A man using the alias "D.B. Cooper" hijacked Northwest Orient Flight 305, extorted $200,000 in ransom, and parachuted into the Pacific Northwest. He was never found.
UNSOLVED THEFT
Gardner Museum Heist
1990
Thirteen masterworks — including Vermeer's "The Concert" and Rembrandt's "The Storm on the Sea of Galilee" — were stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston. Estimated value: $500 million. The FBI has stated it knows who the thieves were. No charges have been filed. A $10 million reward remains active.

Black Dahlia — Elizabeth Short
1947
Elizabeth Short's body was found in a Los Angeles vacant lot, surgically bisected and completely drained of blood. One of the most publicized murder cases in American history. No forensic DNA has been recovered. LAPD original files were largely destroyed.

Tupac Shakur Homicide
1996
Tupac Shakur was shot four times in a drive-by shooting in Las Vegas following a Mike Tyson fight. He died six days later. Duane "Keffe D" Davis was indicted in October 2023. Active prosecution is ongoing.

Notorious B.I.G. Homicide
1997
Christopher Wallace was shot in a drive-by in Los Angeles. A federal judge found in 2005 that the LAPD had suppressed evidence. The LAPD investigation remains open. No arrests have been made in over 25 years.

Amerithrax — 2001 Anthrax Letters
2001
Anthrax-laced letters were mailed to news media and U.S. senators, killing five people and infecting 17 others. The FBI closed the case in 2010, naming USAMRIID scientist Bruce Ivins as the sole perpetrator. Ivins died by suicide in 2008 before charges were filed. A 2011 National Academy of Sciences review disputed the scientific basis of the FBI's conclusion.

Chicago Tylenol Murders
1982
Seven people died after taking cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules purchased in the Chicago area. The case changed how America packages medicine. The primary suspect, James Lewis, died in 2023. DNA from an extortion letter remains unmatched.

Alcatraz Escape — Morris & Anglin Brothers
1962
Frank Morris and brothers John and Clarence Anglin vanished from Alcatraz Federal Penitentiary on June 11, 1962. U.S. Marshals warrants remain active. A 2018 letter claiming to be from John Anglin was inconclusive. Danish ocean current modeling suggests survival was possible.
